Radiofrequency Rhizotomy

A Solution for Persistent Pain

When medication and physical therapy fail to alleviate neck pain or back pain, radiofrequency ablation (also known as radiofrequency rhizotomy/RFA) might be the best treatment option. This outpatient procedure disrupts pain signals between the nerves and the brain.

RFA is effective for spinal arthritis treatment and for treating pain that originates in the spinal facet joints. The pain-relieving effects of this minimally invasive procedure may be immediate, or pain may gradually decrease over the course of a few weeks.

About Radiofrequency Ablation

Before beginning this procedure, the patient receives a mild sedative and an injection of a numbing agent at the incision site. A thin, needle-like device with an electromagnetic tip is then inserted through the skin, and the tip superheats the nerve ending to deaden pain signals.

Recovery Time After RFA Treatment

RFA may cause some soreness or swelling, along with tenderness that may last a day or two, but most patients are able to move about comfortably and return to normal activity the day after the procedure.

A Conservative Approach to Pain Management

Most conditions that cause neck pain and back pain can be treated without surgery. American Pain Consortium uses physical therapy, medication management, and minimally invasive techniques to help reduce chronic pain for our patients. If you have spinal arthritis or another condition that causes chronic back or neck pain, we have solutions.
