A caudal epidural steroid injection is a treatment for
sciatic nerve pain, spinal stenosis, and herniated discs of the lower spine. It may also
be helpful for people who have lower back pain resulting from a previous
back surgery (failed back surgery syndrome). Caudal injections can relieve lower back pain, along with radiating
nerve pain in the legs.
Many patients need only one injection to experience significant improvement
in their symptoms, but repeat injections may be necessary if sciatic nerve
pain persists.
About the Procedure
Patients receive a mild sedative but remain awake during a caudal injection,
which is usually completed within 30 minutes. The injection site is numbed
with an anesthetic before the pain management specialist inserts a thin
needle above the tailbone and injects a mixture of anesthetic and steroid
medications to soothe irritated nerves.
Post-Injection Recovery
Most patients are able to return to normal activity the day after this
treatment.
Pain relief may be immediate, but as the anesthetic wears off, pain may
return. The pain-relieving steroid medication becomes effective after
a few days. If patients don’t feel better within two weeks, additional
injections may be required.
